Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to buy my own music?

All members are required to purchase a folder and Carols for Choirs Book 1. Music is borrowed for each concert by our librarian and can be hired at a reasonable cost. All we ask is that you look after the score and return the music after the concert. If you wish to buy music, then we can purchase it on your behalf.

2. How do I join the choir?

Come along to a few rehearsals, join in and sing, and then you will have an audition. This is a painless affair and is held on a Tuesday evening after normal rehearsal, when most choir members have gone home.

3. So I don't have to sing in front of the choir then?

No, just the conductor.

4. Do I have to be able to read music to join?

Yes, you have to have a general ability to read music.

5. Do you take a register of attendance?

Yes we do. We like  a high attendance. If this is not possible,  we ask you to talk to the registrar and/or Chairman.

6. I am a lady who used to sing alto, but would prefer to sing tenor. Can I do that?

Yes, we are quite happy to let ladies sing in the tenor section and men in the alto section.

7. On what evening do you perform concerts?

Our concerts usually start at 7:30 pm on a Saturday at Priory Place Church in Doncaster Town Centre. There are other concerts, such as when we take part in the Cultural Festival in the summer.

8. What do I have to wear for a concert?

Women wear ankle length plain black skirt  or smart trousers & plain black long-sleeved top or full length black dress with long sleeves; black stockings or tights; black shoes.

Men wear plain black dinner suit; white shirt; plain black bow tie; black socks & black shoes.

9. I do not have a black dinner suit. Do I have to buy one?

If you discuss this problem with choir members/committee, a solution can often be found to avoid you having to spend a lot of money before  your first concert.

10. How can I receive help to practice my notes?

We have a help page - just follow this link >>
